This is a Japanese urushi (lacquer) stationery box made during the Showa period, and presented in its original wooden storage box. Its elegant design and practical compartments make it a versatile addition to any collection.

Nashiji Urushi Technique

The box showcases the captivating Nashiji (梨子地) technique, a traditional Wajima lacquer method. This intricate process involves sprinkling coarse gold or tin powder onto the lacquer surface, which is then carefully layered and polished. The result is a mesmerizing, sparkling effect that shifts with the light, reminiscent of the delicate, speckled texture of a pear.

On the lid:

The lid of this box is richly decorated with coarse gold powder, creating a striking contrast against the deep, dark background. Two small gold painted plants are gracefully positioned in the lower half of the lid, facing each other. This thoughtful arrangement creates a negative space between them, a hallmark of traditional Japanese aesthetics that emphasizes balance and harmony.
