The 1960s were an exciting and intensely competitive period for Japan’s watch industry. One of the main battlegrounds was the everyday waterproof watch. The competition began when Citizen released the Parawater, Japan’s first waterproof watch. Seiko soon followed with the Cronos Waterproof, Seiko's first waterproof watch, and positioned it as a luxury watch suitable for skiing, skating, swimming, and other everyday water-related activities.

This was made possible by a waterproof case rated to withstand water pressure up to 50 meters, thanks to a two-part caseback system consisting of a caseback and a screwed-in caseback ring/holder. Together, these components made the watch highly resistant to moisture.

The Seiko Cronos was also the first Seiko model to feature the seahorse logo on the caseback, used to identify its manual-wind waterproof watches.

Condition

This Seiko Cronos Water Proof is presented in honest vintage condition. The case retains its sharp original lines and distinctive faceted lugs.

The dial is in pristine condition with no visible patina. The Seiko Cronos logo and “Waterproof” text are crisp and legible, with a slight hint of blue on the “50.” The original plexiglass and Seiko-signed crown are still present, adding to its overall originality.

The two-part caseback features the iconic seahorse engraving, which has been slightly worn but remains legible.

The service history is unknown, but the 21-jewel movement runs well and retains a tactile feel when manually wound.
