The Seiko 7A28-7120 is one of the most important quartz chronographs of the 1980s. It uses 7A28, launched in 1983 - it's the world’s first analogue quartz chronograph movement, and it was the first Seiko chronograph issued by the RAF.
The dial has three sub-registers: running seconds at 6 o’clock, a 30-minute counter at 9, and a 1/10-second display at 3. The chronograph is started, stopped, and reset with separate pushers, and the split-seconds control (pusher at 10 o'clock) makes it more complicated and technical than other Chronographs of the era.
RAF issue history
It was said that the RAF adopted the 7A28-7120 (Gen 1) in October 1984, and issue continued until November 1990, when it was replaced by the 7T27-7A20 (Gen 2). Around 11,300 pieces of the Gen 1 were supplied in total, making it one of the rarest and best known British military quartz chronographs.
The watch was ordered to replace earlier mechanical chronographs for reliability, accuracy, and lower maintenance. The RAF version used fixed spring bars, a matte case finish, and a black dial with Promethium lume, marked by the circled “P” under the Seiko logo.
7A28 Movement
The 7A28 family is much broader than the RAF model. Other references include 7A28-7020, 7A28-702A, 7A28-7040, 7A28-7049, 7A28-7100, 7A28-7110, 7A28-7130, and 7A28-7A00, among others.
It also appeared well outside military use. The 7A28 showed up in films such as A View to a Kill and Aliens.
