A rare 1960s medical watch, the Doxa Sfygmos pulsometer monopusher takes its name from the Greek word for “pulsation” and was designed for doctors who needed to time a pulse with one hand. The single pusher at 2 o’clock controls start, stop, and reset with one finger, leaving the other hand free to handle the stethoscope during examination. This purposeful layout makes the Sfygmos makes it a rare bird among other vintage chronographs of the same era.

Contrary to what some online sources suggest, the dial is not split into two physical levels: both the hour track and the pulsation scale are printed on a single, flat dial. What creates the impression of a stepped construction is the internal ring-shaped “cyclops” that sits beneath the crystal, encircling and magnifying the pulsation markings. This under-crystal magnifier gives the outer ring extra emphasis while leaving the central hours crisp and clean, resulting in a uniquely three-dimensional look without a multi-part dial.

Instead of the usual 12 o’clock reset, the Doxa Sfygmos starts and resets its chronograph seconds hand at 9 o’clock, adding a unique touch to this watch.

Inside, the Sfygmos is powered by Valjoux 23, a hand-wound, column-wheel chronograph caliber that is a benchmark of mid-century chronograph design. Known for its precise actuation, robust construction, and enduring reliability, the Valjoux 72 was the movement of choice for many respected brands of the era and remains highly regarded among collectors today.

Condition

The silver dial remains in clean, honest vintage condition, with slight discolouration/patina developing from 9 to 12 o’clock over the pulsation text and tracks, plus small patina spots toward the center of the dial.

The case appears unpolished, retaining its sharp edges and original case lines, while the case back shows a noticeable scratch but all engravings are clear, intact, and fully legible.

The manual-winding movement runs smoothly with precise, tactile operation, and the chronograph functions correctly, with all hands starting, stopping, and resetting crisply back to zero.
