In the early 1960s, Orient set out to craft high-end timepieces capable of standing alongside the finest Swiss watches. Between 1961 and 1963, several Grand Prix models were released — initially powered by upgraded versions of existing movements. By 1963–1964, Orient introduced dedicated calibers for the flagship Grand Prix watches.

Among these, the Grand Prix Calendar Auto stands out as a particularly fascinating chapter in Orient’s evolution. Firstly introduced in 1962, it was one of the first Orient watches to feature the LCW automatic movement, which employed a Pellaton-type winding system. This new movement improved efficiency and shock resistance compared to most automatic winding systems of the era. At 30.3 mm, the movement was larger than typical Orient calibers at the time, resulting in a well-proportioned, 36mm case that feels modern and wearable even today.

The Calendar Auto's sunburst dial is hard to capture on camera, featuring a gold-framed date window at 3 o’clock, tapered dauphine hands, and applied gold markers that catch the light with subtle brilliance.

Key Features of this Orient Grand Prix Calendar Auto:

  • 37 mm case | 44.5 mm lug-to-lug | 19 mm lug width
  • 14k gold filled case and snap-on caseback
  • Original Orient-signed crown
  • First Orient watches to feature the LCW automatic movement
  • Applied gold hour marker and date-window frame on a silver dial
