The Universal Genève Calatrava Ref. 50617, made in 1960, is a refined and understated timepiece crafted in yellow gold. This watch distinguishes itself from the more common Polerouter models, drawing comparisons to the Patek Philippe classic Calatrava models with its exquisite gold indices, dauphine hands, and centrally positioned sweep second hand.

The 14k gold case with angular lugs was crafted by Gabus Freres, a renowned case maker based in Le Locle, Switzerland, active from 1934 to 1980. The company's signature is revealed by the hammerhead mark number 141 found on the caseback. Gabus Freres gained significant recognition in the horological world for their innovative work, particularly their patented ultra-thin cases for Vacheron Constantin.

From the mid-1930s to the early 1950s, the manufacturer made a notable impact with their distinctive square "Gabus" chronograph series. This design proved especially influential in the watch industry, catching the attention of prestigious brands like Rolex. Prime examples of their technical mastery include the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony and the Rolex Gabus 8206.

Key Features:

  1. Rare angular lugs: distinctive, angular lugs that deviate from traditional rounded shapes. This geometric approach to the lug design adds a subtle Art Deco influence.
  2. Calatrava Design: gold dauphine hands with centered sweeping seconds, simple & elegant gold indices with double indices at 12 o'clock
  3. 14k Yellow Gold case: Luxurious solid gold construction that offers both prestige and lasting value, developing a warm patina over time.
  4. Elegant 34 mm size: A versatile diameter that suits a wide range of wrist sizes and adheres to classic proportions favored in vintage timepieces.
  5. Original Universal Genève clamshell box: Comes complete with its period-correct presentation box, adding collectible value and ensuring authentic provenance.
  6. Hammerhead no.141, Gabus Freres as the case maker that gained significant recognition in the horological world for their innovative work, particularly their patented ultra-thin cases for Vacheron Constantin.
